InuYasha leaned back against the rough branches of Goshinboku. Kagome had gone off to her time after a very loud and very painful argument, for InuYasha, that is, over it. 'Stupid girl. What's so special about these eggs-hams of hers that she has to go back to her time? She told me she doesn't like them, yet she still keeps going back for them.' He growled. “Stupid Kagome and her damn eggs-hams.”

He cast a glance over at the wooden well, hoping that Kagome would pop up with that overstuffed yellow bag of hers if he stared at it hard enough. He missed her, but he wouldn't admit that. 'Kagome, come back. I miss you......WHAT THE HELL AM THINKING?!' InuYasha sat up quickly in surprise, almost falling off his perch at his act. He dug his claws into the bark to steady himself. 'I don't miss her, do I?' He quizzed himself.

The familiar scent of sakura blossoms brought him out of his musings. He bounded over to the well, leaning into it to peer into its depths. “Hey InuYasha!” Kagome greeted from the bottom of the well, repositioning the yellow bag on her shoulders.

“Hey.”

“Can you help me up?” InuYasha reached into the well with a clawed hand, meeting Kagome's outstretched one and pulled her out with ease. He set her down on the grass, not letting go of her hand.

A small play of emotions flickered on InuYasha's face, before settling on one that clearly stated pure contentedness. “Umm...InuYasha, you can let go of my hand now.” Kagome said, a slight blush coloring her cheeks and a small smile tugging at her lips.

“Feh!” InuYasha said, releasing the said appendage of Kagome's while a blush tinted his cheeks. He turned away, tucking his hands into the sleeves of his fire rat haori.

“C'mon, wench. We gotta leave before noon.” InuYasha said, then started walking towards Kaede's hut where the others were resting. Kagome nodded and followed him. “Will ya hurry it up?! We haven't got all day ya know?!” InuYasha growled irritably.

“Well sorry that I have to carry so much ramen for someone.” Kagome huffed.

“Keh!” InuYasha said half heartedly and swept the girl off her feet and started running at a much faster pace.

“Hey! Put me down!” Kagome protested, clinging onto him for dear life.

“No way. You walk too slow.” InuYasha replied.

“Bye Kaede! And thank you!” Kagome waved to the old priestess.

“Ye and friends are always welcome in my hut! May your journey be prosperous!” Kaede called after them. The group resumed their quest for jewel shards.

InuYasha, once again absorbed by his thoughts, stared into the campfire from his perch on the tree. The day was uneventful, asides from the small village they came upon whilst traveling.

Flashback

“It's a demon! Run!” Numerous screams like these were heard as the villagers looked upon the group.

“Hanyou!” InuYasha's ears flattened against his scalp as they passed through the village. Sometimes, he wished that he was a full fledged demon. But that meant losing himself. He wouldn't be able to protect Kagome. He would be a bloodthirsty demon, who lusted for blood and killing. He looked down at his claws. Seeing Kagome's blood staining them would be unbearable. He shuddered at the thought.

“InuYasha?” InuYasha looked up. “Don't let them get to you.” Kagome said, taking his hand in hers.

“I'm just a filthy half breed. To them, I'm an abomination.”

“No you're not. No one is. Everyone is different, unique. You can't hate people for being the way they are.” She released his hand and hugged him. “I love you just the way you are.” Kagome said into his haori. InuYasha smiled and wrapped his arms around her.

End of flashback

The same fire was also Shippo's source of entertainment. The young kitsune poked at the flames with a stick. A glowing ember flew from the pile and settled on Shippo's hand, burning him slightly.

“Owww! Kagome!” Shippo cried, dropping the stick and running towards the said girl. Kagome looked up from her Math book and glanced at the whimpering kitsune.

“Shippo, you know better than to play with fire.” Kagome scolded him. InuYasha looked up from his fire-staring to smirk at the two. 'She takes care of Shippo so well. I wonder if that's how she'll treat our pups.....WHY AM I THINKING THAT?! She'll never agree to be a lowly half breed's mate, will she?' InuYasha was again consumed by his thoughts.

“InuYasha, I love you as a half demon.” Kagome confessed as she looked up at the star studded sky.

“I love you just the way you are.”

“Sorry Kagome.” Shippo apologized.

“It's okay. C'mon. Let's bandage that up.” Kagome reached over and pulled out her first aid kit and started treating Shippo's hand.

Flashback

'Kagome, what'd I do this time?' InuYasha looked up at the clear blue sky, expecting an answer from it. She'd run to the well crying, her materials packed hastily into her yellow bag. He trudged back to Kaede's hut, facing hateful glares from Shippo and Sango, a look of sympathy and slight irritation from Miroku. He sat himself in a corner, ignoring his friends' looks.

“InuYasha, you're such an idiot! You made Kagome run home crying!” Shippo shouted.

“You can't go on forever running between Lady Kikyo and Kagome. Kagome can't possibly take on any more pain that you cause her.” Miroku said.

“I can't believe how Kagome can handle you. She does everything she can for you and more! And what does she get in return? You insulting her about little things and running off doing who-knows-what with Kikyo!” Sango shook her head. Guilt and understanding hit him like a slap in the face. 'I didn't know I hurt her that much...Kagome, I'm sorry for everything....even though I knew that you cared for me and got hurt every time I saw Kikyo, I still ran off to see her every time, not caring how you felt. I've been selfish. I'm sorry.'

'Kagome didn't care that I was a half demon. She trusted me no matter what. She never judged me by my mixed heritage unlike others. Unlike Kikyo. Kikyo pinned me to the tree without a second thought. She never trusted me. She never loved me, and I never loved her. Our souls were merely longing for companionship. We were both different, which forced us to believe that we loved each other. It's different with Kagome. I trust her, I care about her. I do everything I can to keep her out of harm's way, even if it meant risking my life. Maybe, I do love her.

“Well what'd you expect?!”

“Stupid girl.” InuYasha mumbled under his breath, then rose and picked up Kagome bridal style.

“Hey! What're you doing?!” Kagome protested. InuYasha ignored her protests and jumped up the tree, resuming his place. “I don't like it up here. I might fall.” Kagome said, gripping InuYasha's haori.

“You're not gonna fall.” InuYasha muttered, leaning against the tree trunk like before. “Do you think I'll let you?” He added and pulled Kagome closer to reassure her concern. She relaxed and leaned against him.

“Thanks, InuYasha.” Kagome said before drifting off into dream land. InuYasha smiled, shrugged off his haori and put it around the now sleeping girl.

Kagome snuggled closer to her pillow. Until it laughed. 'What?! Pillows don't laugh.' Kagome thought. It smelled like the forest after the rain. Like InuYasha. Then realization dawned on her. InuYasha was her pillow. “InuYasha?” She asked, lifting up her sleepy head.

“The one and only.” He replied, smirking.

“Why am I in a tree?” Kagome asked, still trying to recall last night's events.

“You couldn't sleep, so I picked you up and helped you get to sleep.”

“Oh, I remember now.” Kagome said. “Thanks, InuYasha.” She reached up and started rubbing his ears. He started to, well, purr. InuYasha's hands locked around her wrists.

“We'll fall off this tree if you keep doing that.” He stated as he looked into her chocolate orbs.

“Sorry.”

“S'okay.”

“So how did the two lovebirds sleep last night?” Miroku asked, amused.

“Shut up, monk.” InuYasha growled, catching his perverted friend's double meaning of the question. He reached up and threw a stick at the monk's head.

“Oww! I am so misunderstood.” Miroku said, feigning mock hurt as he rubbed his head. “Ahh! My lovely Sango!” He opened his arms as he noticed the demon slayer. A thump echoed through the forest, signaling that Sango had used her Hiraikotsu to hit Miroku.

“Pervert!” Sango screamed, stomping away from the monk who now lay on the ground rubbing his now twice bonked head with a stupid grin on his face.

“Miroku, when are you ever gonna learn?” Shippo asked him as InuYasha laughed at his friend's antics.

“I swear Miroku, you're gonna get a concussion if you keep that up. It's a wonder you don't lose IQ points with that constant beating of yours.” Kagome said, shaking her head.
